Fellows Training Programme

A core part of LEAD's mission to inspire sustainable development involves building a network of international cross-sector professionals who can motivate action on sustainability.

To join the LEAD Fellows network, applicants must complete our acclaimed Fellows Training Programme.

Almost 1800 LEAD Fellows have graduated from our highly successful LEAD training programme since 1991.

Fellows gain first hand experience of achievements, as well as challenges facing their own and other countries, and learn how to work effectively in teams to find and foster solutions.

We equip these 'rising stars' with the skills and knowledge to make them increasingly cross-sectoral leaders in their own communities and on the world stage.

The Challenge

A principal challenge facing decision makers in all countries is how to create policies and actions that reflect the link between economic prosperity, a healthy environment, and social equity.

Such policies must transcend traditional boundaries—those between disciplines, sectors, nationalities, cultures and generations—and will require innovative thought and sensitive, creative leadership to develop and implement them.

LEAD's role

To respond to this challenge, we have designed the LEAD Fellows Training Programme to focus on strengthening knowledge of sustainable development and enhancing key leadership skills among new groups of leaders.

The majority of training is undertaken at the regional level, with additional inter-regional and international components available.

The LEAD Approach

The Fellows Training Programme is a multi-stage progression of learning activities that build upon each other, and is structured in a way that allows participants (Associates) to remain in full employment for the duration of the programme.

It aims to develop participants’ understanding of key sustainable development issues at the local, national and global level, and provides a forum for exchanging experiences and visions for managing these issues.

The training is highly participatory, drawing on both the experience of participants as well as involving external actors at different levels to provide an environment for peer learning and sharing. This is achieved with a mix of methodologies, including both traditional formats and innovative training delivery techniques.

Joining the network

Upon completion of this programme, participants become LEAD Fellows and join a real and virtual network of talented individuals from over 80 countries. Fellows frequently mention the value of being part of the large LEAD family, where lifelong relationships are formed and continue to be strengthened over the years after their graduation from the programme.

Who should apply

The Fellows Training Programme is ideal for mid career professionals demonstrating outstanding leadership potential and who would benefit from extensive contact with other leaders from across the world, from residential courses, and from a strong peer-learning experience.
