Over the last 50 years, the world has witnessed tremendous improvements in human wealth with the near eradication of some major communicable diseases; the discovery of low-cost treatments for some serious health conditions; a 50 per cent reduction in infant mortality, a doubling of access to safe drinking water, and an increase in life expectancy of 20 years in developing countries.
