Building Sustainable Livelihoods on the Tsunami-affected Nicobar Islands
Three organisations - LEAD International, LEAD India and The Covenant Centre for Development (CCD) run by LEAD India Fellow Muthu Velayutham - are working together ona new project "Building Sustainable Livelihoods on the Tsunami-affected Nicobar Islands". The project is generously funded by the Big Lottery Fund, UK.
The project will deliver a combination of interventions to enhance the capacity of farmers and other population groups on Great Nicobar island badly hit by the 2004 Asian tsunami to enjoy improved livelihoods. The project has an integrated approach to sustainble livelihoods, and aims to promote community enterprise activities to strengthen income sources, encourage better natural resource management and the use of simple clean technologies to meet everyday needs and to deliver health benefits.
Training and capacity building activities on farming, natural resource management, energy, health and sanitation issues delivered by the Project team and selected external experts will equip communities with skills to develop and implement relevant solutions that they own. Project will also support and facilitate fuller participation and involvement of community representatives in decision-making processes on Great Nicobar island.
