    LEAD India Fellow Deepak Apte receives Award in London LEAD India Fellow , Deepak Apte, a marine biologist with the Bombay Natural History Society, has received a one of the world’s top prizes for grassroots nature conservation – A Whitley Award - for his work to protect the marine life of the Lakshadweep archipelago. The prize was presented to him by HRH ThePrincess Royal (Princess Anne) at the Royal Geographical Society in London on 21 May 2008.

Nearly 7,000 participants from 191 countries opened the Conference to take takes steps to conserve and sustainably manage the world’s biodiversity in light of the alarming rate of loss of species, compounded by the pressures from climate change.

    With support of filmmaker and LEAD India Fellow Aradhana Kohli Kapoor, LEAD India produced a film series on the environment for Doordarshan, an Indian Television channel. The series – The Thin Green Line, featured discussions between school children and eminent environmentalists on a whole number of topical environmental issues. The series was supported by film showings, debates and discussions at a number of venues. environmentalists on issues related to Animal Rights, Human and Wildlife Conflicts, Economic Development & Environmental Degradation, Closure of Polluting Industries & Labour Problems, Eco Tourism & Environmental Degradation.

    Long-standing LEAD supporter and former LEAD Executive Director, Julia Marton–Lefevre has been conferred as a Chevalier de Legion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour) in recognition of her outstanding work on sustainable development. The Legion d’Honneur is the highest civil award bestowed by the French Republic and is given to people of all backgrounds and nationalities for exceptional service over a long career.

    Climate Change Africa Consultations: Six Messages From Civil Society In its most recent report, the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlighted the serious impact climate change will have on Africa. In response to this, LEAD Africa, LEAD International and their African partners, SouthSouthNorth (SSN), ENDA Du Tiers Monde (ENDA TM), and the African Centre for Technology (ACTS), brought together development and climate change experts from across sub-Saharan Africa to discuss how the continent should adapt to climate change. This paper presents six key messages which represent a summary of the discussions and recommendations for action.

  • Asia Young Leaders Climate Forum

    Asia Young Leaders Climate Forum In December 2008, LEAD and the British Council delivered a climate change action workshop for the Asia Young Leaders Climate Forum (AYLCF). The workshop helped AYLCF develop a climate action agenda and project ideas for helping young people and communities tackle climate change. The workshop outcomes were then presented at the United Nations Conference of Parties on Climate Change in Bali. Sir Nicholas Stern was so impressed with the AYLCF vision and commitment that he agreed to mentor the group.

  • Survey shows LEAD Fellowship Programme positively impacts sustainable development

    In 2006, LEAD conducted a major ‘Measuring the Impact’ survey of Fellows from its global network to find out how they felt the Fellowship Programme had helped them to prioritise sustainable development. The results were overwhelmingly positive with over 75% of those surveyed saying that the training had a high or very high impact on their lives. Many said going through the LEAD Fellowship programme had been a ‘life-changing experience’.
