Fellows Recommendations: South Africa

LEAD South Africa Fellows made a number of observations – summarised below:

Fellows stressed the imbalance in the allocation of resources: it appears that 95% of funding goes to Natural Resource Management with only 5% on securing sustainable livelihoods.

Widening of partnerships to include community organisations, science, and media within the SDD programme would bring more value to the process.

Developing programmes dealing with cross-cutting issues related to health (HIV/AIDs) and capacity building with the gender focus should receive immediate attention.

Other areas that should be highlighted within the SDD plan include:

  • Research and development and technology transfer for cleaner sources, funding and investment in clean development technologies
  • Information and Education on climate change

Suggested project ideas included:

  • Micro community-level projects addressing issues such as environmental justice, awareness raising campaigns on good governance, environmental rights and responsibilities
  • Environmental enforcement
  • Capacity building
  • Eco-tourism
  • Projects on sustainable rural area development to address poverty alleviation
