Fellows Recommendations: South Africa
LEAD South Africa Fellows made a number of observations – summarised below:
Fellows stressed the imbalance in the allocation of resources: it appears that 95% of funding goes to Natural Resource Management with only 5% on securing sustainable livelihoods.
Widening of partnerships to include community organisations, science, and media within the SDD programme would bring more value to the process.
Developing programmes dealing with cross-cutting issues related to health (HIV/AIDs) and capacity building with the gender focus should receive immediate attention.
Other areas that should be highlighted within the SDD plan include:
- Research and development and technology transfer for cleaner sources, funding and investment in clean development technologies
- Information and Education on climate change
Suggested project ideas included:
- Micro community-level projects addressing issues such as environmental justice, awareness raising campaigns on good governance, environmental rights and responsibilities
- Environmental enforcement
- Capacity building
- Eco-tourism
- Projects on sustainable rural area development to address poverty alleviation
