Fellows Recommendations: Mexico
LEAD Mexico Fellows made a number of observations – summarised below:
Participants gave positive responses and were very interested about the possibility of collaboration with other countries, especially on issues of urbanisation, green building, land-use planning, and transportation.
Some observations from Fellows were on the lack of local government involvement; although cities are included as a part of the focus of the Programme. Furthermore, some participants commented that the Work programme seemed to fail to identify the true stakeholders, including communities, local CSOs, NGOs – with too much apparent emphasis on tourism.
Suggested areas for review / consideration include the following:
- Development of green markets as drivers of sustainable economic development
- Promotion of a full range of sustainable natural resource management policies, including biodiversity conservation
- More strategic approach needed for climate change adaptation policies and practices across all major policy areas
- There is an urgent need for more consultations and experience sharing in regard to sustainable architecture and land use planning
- Action orientated projects on water management and wastewater treatment should be encouraged
- Projects addressing rural poverty alleviation through sustainable agriculture should be developed
- Awareness raising and offering support for alternative transportation methods for reducing the negative impact of the industry on climate change
