SDDs in China
A major agreement on high-level dialogue on sustainable development was signed between China and the UK in November 2005. China's Programme of Action notes the importance of the role of government in coordinating and spearheading the implementation of the sustainable development strategy and properly handling the relationship of economic globalization and sustainability.
Themes common to both the UK Sustainable Development Strategy and China's Sustainable Development Action Plan formed the initial areas of focus under the SDD include the followings:
- Natural Resource Protection and Management
- Economic Restructuring
- Urban Development
- Energy for Sustainable Development
- Capacity Building for Sustainability
- Economic Globalization
- Sustainable Consumption and Production
Examples of projects:
Projects that have been implemented under the SDD programme include:
On Natural Resource Management: Biodiversity management and recovery, strengthening local communities and capacity building in local authorities for better environmental governance, forest management, water and sanitation;
On Mainstreaming Sustainable Development: Publications and new media programmes on social development, social justice and environmental issues, civil society strengthening and promoting public participation, capacity building on environmental policy models for top government officials
On Sustainable Production and Consumption: Business leaders dialogue, sustainable tourism
On Climate Change and Energy: CDMs, emission reduction and trading, energy efficiency, energy security
On International Development: Partnership to reduce global poverty
On agriculture: Methane production mitigation strategies, crop research, biophysical aspects of sustainable development
