Focus Group: outcomes and reflections

Fellows identified the SDDs as a useful mechanism for the UK to promote, through its bilateral relationships, wider multi-lateral exchange on key areas of sustainable development policy and practice.

  • Appreciating the value of having such a framework for collaboration as provided by the SDDs, participants expressed support for cooperation and exchange of best practice on climate change adaptation.
  • LEAD Fellows from China and Africa suggested that the SDDs process could help to support the promotion of sustainable development within Sino – Africa dialogue.
  • At a global level the SDDs should encourage and support Multi-county projects, for instance on payments for ecosystem services – making greater use of the opportunity to learn from existing projects supported by the UK government.
  • The SDDs also presents an opportunity to better communicate the role of the BRICS countries in reducing GHG emissions, with emphasis on technology transfer and efforts towards ‘clean growth’.
  • Given the global perspective of the SDDs process, there should be scope for work programmes to consider trans-boundary projects as well as national level and activities. Key SDDs countries can be used as focal points for initiatives that establish linkages at a regional level.
  • LEAD International is able to share successful SDDs projects, policy outcomes or other initiatives through annual International Sessions that bring together around 150 emerging leaders, many from the countries involved in the SDDs process.
