LEAD Associate Training

• LEAD Associate Training cohort XI -  mixed target audience from all sectors
The theme of Cohort XI seminar and training “Corporate Social Responsibility” has encouraged staff to develop a comprehensive and structured new curricula which include core LEAD training (sustainable development principles, system thinking, ecological carrying capacity) and other elements such as social capital development, bridging leadership, sustainability report and other issues related to corporate social responsibility (CSR). 

The training has brought LEAD Indonesia into contact with the business community, management schools, and mass media. The national training session began in January 2005, the regional training conducted by Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, and ended with the international training session in India in February 2006.

The theme of the training was “Road Map toward the Future Energy of Indonesia and the Anticipation of Climate Change” – under the scheme of sustainable development and leadership (integrated policy among government agencies, and public private community partnership)- considered as strategic to the country. Energy scarcity and cost have been a problem to Indonesia as the country has had to develop alternative energy beyond fossils. Climate change brings continuous problems that affect water supply, and it is believed that it has caused various problems that affect water supply, food security, fishery, forestry and plantation.

LEAD – like training

Promoting Leadership for Integrated Development (PLID)- public policy decision makers at the district level

PLID supported by Ford Foundation is a 2-year project to equip the public decision makers at the district level with an understanding of the importance of sustainable development in Indonesia.

Facilitators that will use the case study also joined a workshop on “Case Study in Practice” and have learned the theory as well as the practice of using case study.

Bridging Leadership for Young Leaders of Aceh Nangro Darussalam – target audience: community leaders

With the funding from Canadian International Development Aid (CIDA) LEAD Indonesia has started a new program to build the capacity of community leaders at the grass root level in Aceh Nangro Darussalam (NAD).  The project is strategic for the province that has been affected by tsunami and lose of its leaders. It is also timely as the province has been left behind in development activities in the country due to 30 years internal conflict between the separatists group movement and the government.  In those years there was no significant development activities taking place.

Introducing Sustainability Tools to Corporate Community

With the support from LEAD International, LEAD Indonesia launched an experimental program for corporate community by introducing it to sustainability tools from AtKisson.  LEAD Indonesia believes that the corporate sector needs  practical tools that converted sustainable development into their daily operation which can also at the end enhance the corporate performance and image. In cooperation with AtKisson Inc. LEAD Indonesia developed a team of Fellows who becomes the promoters of sustainability tools from AtKisson.

Project “Coral Reefs Conservation through Community Ownership and Enterprise”

The project on “Coral Reefs Conservation through Community Ownership and Enterprise” supported by the UK Darwin Initiative started in 2005 and will be completed in 2008. The project is a partnership between LEAD International as the grantee of the Darwin Initiative funding while LEAD Indonesia as the initiator of the project will work with local organizations and international organization in Indonesia. The goal of the project is to shift destructive ornamental fish fishing practices towards sustainable fishing practices that lead toward community enterprise development in ornamental fish trade.

Other LEAD Activities

The year of 2006 has been marked with the extension of our network to the international community that involves various stakeholders and experts from various countries in the issues of sustainable development.

UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) 14th,  1-12 May, New York, USA

YPB as the host of LEAD Indonesia Program has been supported by IIEE to attend the Commission on Sustainable Development 14 event in New York, USA, conducted by United Nation with a theme reviewing progress in energy for sustainable development, industrial development, air pollution/atmosphere,  and climate change. YPB, represented by its Executive Director, has been a member of the Indonesia Delegation and joined the pre meeting in Indonesia with various parties (Ministry of Environment, Department of Energy and Mineral Resources, Department of Foreign Affairs).

World Urban Forum 3, 19-23 June 2006, Vancouver, Canada: “Sustainable Cities – Turning Ideas into Action”

With partial sponsorship from LEAD Canada, LEAD Indonesia National Program Director with Tri Mumpuni (cohort 2) and Lisa Savitri (Training Management Officer) attended an event of UN Habitat in Vancouver 19-23, June 2006.  The event attended by more than 10,000 participants from all over the world with different background and expertise. There were 13 roundtables and over 160 networking events. World Urban Forum 3rd marked the 30th anniversary of the first UN Conference on Human Settlements, which was also held in Vancouver and led to the creation of UN Habitat.

Sustainability of the Planet, October 3-4, 2006 in Stockholm, Sweden

Sustainability of the Planet and Workshop was held in Stockholm on October 3-4, attended by 135 experts from 33 countries, organized by Swedish Industry Association - Sinf. The National Program Director or LEAD Indonesia and Training & Communication Manager joined the activities, supported by The Swedish International Development Assistance (SIDA). Both were involved in the working group for follow up actions. A new partnership developed between Sinf and LEAD Indonesia to work towards future activities.

AtKisson Incorporated: Promoting Sustainability Scheme to Business Community

With the support from LEAD International under Special Opportunity Investment Funds, LEAD Indonesia developed a new partnership with AtKisson Tools incorporation to disseminate sustainability accelerators indicators for business community.  The goal of the program is to assist the company develops its sustainability policy, strategy, indicators/milestones through intensive planning process where the directions of sustainability should be in place and assessment process has to be formulated. Once the planning and assessment process takes place, the company can produce a more accountable sustainability report.


Involvement of Fellows

Catharina Any Sulystiwowati (cohort 7) was invited to participate in the UNDP "Leadership in Governance Program" in November 2005 (organized by LEAD International), then joined  the Training for Trainers event in Bangkok in July 2006, and acted as a trainer in the program in Colombo  the following October.

Jamal Gawi (cohort 4) and Chandra Wirman (cohort 10) supported by LEAD International have joined the LEAD Training on sustainable development and  community development prepared for the corporate sector in July 2006.  It is expected that in the future they can assist LEAD International Office and LEAD Indonesia as trainers when new projects on community development take place.

Raising LEAD’s visibility and partnership

Year 2006 marked a new partnership with CIDA that supports the program of Bridging Leadership to strengthen community leaders in Aceh Nangro Darussalam, tsunami affected area. The training has inspired LEAD Indonesia to scale up the project into long term activities so that the impact will be more meaningful to the area that has been isolated and lack of education strengthening for 30 years. The sustainability development scheme is a strategy to rebuild the destroyed area but ensure a more sustainable future for the population.

SIDA (Swedish International Development Aid) was the sponsor for two staff of LEAD Indonesia to join the Sustainability of the Planet on October 3-4, 2006 Forum and Workshop in Stockholm, Swedish. The event has exposed LEAD Indonesia in the international arena of institutions who have the concerns on the depletion of natural resources toward 2050.

Fellows Major Achievements

Tri Mumpuni, cohort 2 selected as one of the national hero by a leading magazine, Tempo, for her work on rural electrification. She has been working in rural development through micro-hydro electricity that is managed by the community for its sustainability. 

Catharina Any Sulystiowati was a participant in the First Regional Leadership for Young Leaders (Thailand, November-December 2005), as atrainer participant (Thailand, July 2006) and then became the trainer on South Asia Sub Regional Leadership Course for Young Leaders in Governance (Sri Lanka, October 2006), organized by LEAD International, a UNDP Project.

Among others achievements during 2006 we have been notified of the following:

 Rudy Fajar (cohort 10) from Riau Pulp and Paper (leading pulp and paper company) to be the President Director, and Timotheus LW (cohort 10) appointed as General Manager of Sinar Mas Group (a leading plantation and forestry company) who developed CSR and Sustainable Development Compliance and took the leadership on the establishment of Eka Cipta Foundation, the company’s foundation.

Plan for year 2007 and beyond

In the last three years YPB/LEAD Indonesia has made investment for its future path. The core strength of the institution lies in its capacity building in sustainable development for all sectors.

This niche of YPB/LEAD Indonesia will be supported by other programs; LEADing by Knowledge that supports LEADing by Sharing program with case study and research findings; and LEADing by Strategic Partnership to support sustainable development practices as examples of workable actions.

In the next 5 years it is expected that YPB/LEAD Indonesia will be a resource center for sustainable development knowledge and experience.
