Read highlights of LEAD Indonesia 2005 activities
LEAD Indonesia has been hosted by the Foundation for Sustainable Development since 1992. We have been conducting ‘leadership training for sustainable development’ for more than 10 years and currently have 147 LEAD Indonesia Fellows.
Since 2004, LEAD Indonesia and the Foundation for Sustainable Development or Yayasan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (YPB) have been working together on new training programme which includes training LEAD fellows.
The three programmes of LEAD Indonesia
Leading by Sharing
This programme promotes sustainable development principles and practices to various sectors:
- LEAD fellows training: annual training for cross sectoral participants on different themes;
- Promoting Leadership for Integrated Development: training for decision makers at the executive and legislative offices;
- Young Leader Programme: internship opportunities for young leaders, newly graduated and post-graduate.
Leading by Action
The programme supports and researches sustainable development practices. Our on-going activities include:
- Conserving Coral Reefs for Community Ownership and Enterprise: practicing environmentally sound ornamental fish trade with fisherfolk communities and channeling it to international markets, supported by the right policy in natural resources management.
- Community Based Planning for Eco Village Development: applies a participatory approach to developing community based planning for villages, integrated with macro level planning for sustainable development in Aceh.
- Community Alternative Energy for Life: micro hydro electricity power for remote areas adjacent to national parks, ensuring alternative productive economy activities in the village and conserving the national park from illegal encroachment.
- Case study centre: YPB has started to document more than 20 case policy studies which shows the impacts of policy on the environment, social aspect and economic development. The case studies cover various sectors that represent Indonesia such as agriculture, forestry, plantation, fishery, health, and poverty. The case studies are used as reference in LEAD training, which will inspire future policy improvement.
Leading by Partnership
The programme concentrates on water issues for agriculture and involves LEAD Fellows who have expertise in this area. This is a strategic issue for food security in the near future. The research findings, with other leading institutions that have data and other expertise, will lead to a joint policy recommendation for the government agencies toward appropriate policy and strategy.
