Nearly 100 LEAD Fellows are from or are living in Canada. We come from Aboriginal, Anglophone, Francophone and other cultures. We live from the Atlantic to the Pacific and Arctic coasts, in the United States, and overseas. We work in federal, provincial and municipal governments, in major resource and energy corporations, in community-based non-government organisations, in print and film media etc. This cultural, geographic and sectoral diversity is a major strength of the LEAD network. It helps ensure the diversity of views and perspectives necessary for healthy dialogue and sound decision-making concerning sustainable development.
LEAD Canada joined the LEAD network as a Member Program in 1994. From 1994 to 2001, LEAD Canada was administered by Canada’s National Round Table on Environment and Economy, a national research and policy advisory body that reports to Canada’s Prime Minister. LEAD Canada Inc. is a non-profit organization that in 2002 became the Canadian signatory to the LEAD Collaborative Agreement. Pursuant to that Agreement, LEAD Canada Inc., governed by LEAD Fellows, helps represent Canadian interests and participation in the network.
Drawing on our Fellows network, LEAD Canada initiated its first projects in 2005. A national-level project involves research into "green infrastructure" and promoting its application within Canadian municipalities. In an international-level project, we are promoting Canadian awareness of and engagement in the Millennium Development Goals. We are also involved in the preparation for and forthcoming engagement of LEAD in the Third World Urban Forum.
