Read highlights of LEAD Brazil 2006 activities

LEAD Brazil was one of the first LEAD Member Programmes established in 1991 and is hosted by Brazilian Association for Leadership Development (ABDL) on the campus of IPT, Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas in Sao Paulo.

We have a national network of 126 LEAD Fellows and Associates and many are in position of great influence in various sectors in all regions of Brazil. Some of our most senior fellows are, for example:

Rubens is a recognised environmentalist in Brazil for his work on climate change and globalisation. He is also a member of the Brazilian Forum of Social Movements and Organisations for Environment and Development.

Thais Corral is a leader of women’s issues in Brazil and internationally. She has founded three leading non-profit women’s development organisations, two in Brazil (REDEH and CEMINA) and one in the USA, WEDO (Women’s Environment and Development Organisation). She was a ‘Woman of the Year’ in 2001 (Brazilian National Council of Women), is an “Abril Mulher” award winner, and has been listed in “100 Heroines”.

Nilo Sergio de Melo Diniz is a Sociologist and Chair of CONAMA, the consultant and deliberative organ of the Environment National System (SISNAMA). Nilo is also the special assessor of the Brazilian Minister of Environment, Marina Silva. He has coordinated the National Commission on Environment within the United Workers Federation (CUT).

Luiz Carlos Ros Filho is Director of the New Ventures Programme at the World Resources Institute. Before joining WRI, Luiz was the Director of the National Environmental Fund at the Ministry of Environment in Brazil.

LEAD Brazil Partners

The AVINA Foundation is one of our major partners and we have been collaborating on a thematic programme ‘Redesenvolvimento’ which focuses on networking. All qualifying participants of this programme will be eligible to become LEAD Fellows. Other programmes in the field of Coastal Governance, Participatory Methodologies, Conservation & Population are also being planned.

We have a number of capacity development courses under our Kellogg Foundation-funded Pronord 2004 Programme. These include courses on local development and leadership, participation and citizenship, and sustainability of ideas.

We are also about to start a major project with the UK Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) on increasing cross-sectoral dialogue and action on sustainable development in Brazil.
