LEAD Indonesia 2005 Highlights
LEAD Indonesia and its host institution, Foundation for Sustainable Development or Yayasan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (YPB), have focused on three identified areas to make an impact, specifically on “LEADing by Sharing”, “LEADing by Action”, “LEADing by Partnership”.
LEADing by Sharing includes various types of training and capacity development activities. Last year, LEAD Indonesia conducted regular training and developed new training packages, and internships.
Fellows Training Programme:
The theme of the training and projects of the LEAD Fellows Training programme participants in 2005/2006 was “Corporate Social Responsibility”, which encouraged staff to develop a comprehensive and structured new curricula including core LEAD training (sustainable development principles, system thinking, ecological carrying capacity) and other elements such social capital development, bridging leadership, sustainability report and other issues related to corporate social responsibility (CSR). Participants represented government agencies, private sector, mass media, academic institutions and non-governmental organizations.
LEAD Indonesia attracted some key speakers to one of the seminars, which were open to the public. These included the Minister of Environment, Coordinating Minister of Economic Development, and Special Millennium Development Goals Ambassador for Asia Pacific. These training events brought positive exposure to LEAD Indonesia among business community, management institutions, and mass media.
Fellows Achievements:
LEAD Fellows achievements have also received a well-deserved exposure in 2005:
- Tri Mumpuni (Cohort 2) received award as Climate Change Hero from WWF International
- Budi Putra (Cohort 9) has received Citra Darma award from National Library for his article to support library development
- Prasetyoadi (Cohort 10) was the winner of a competition on the revitalization of “Gang Gloria”, the old town part of Jakarta, from Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia and Old Town Kotaku.
- Lieke Riadi (cohort 5) was sponsored by LEAD International to attend World Science Forum in Hungary
- Tri Mumpuni (Cohort 2) was sponsored by LEAD International to join The Renewable Energy Conference in China
- Any Sulistiyowati (Cohort 7) participated at the Young Leaders Program development workshop sponsored and conducted by UNDP in Bangkok
Other activities of LEAD Indonesia included forming partnerships to deliver action projects:
- Promoting Leadership for Integrated Development project (PLID), supported by Ford Foundation, is a 2-year project to equip the public decision makers at the district level with the understanding on the importance of sustainable development in Indonesia. The curricula consist of knowledge related to sustainable development issues and leadership skills as public servants.
- Coral Reef Conservation Through Community Ownership and Enterprise: the project supported by Darwin Initiatives for 3 years, started in 2005 in the northern part of Bali Province. LEAD Indonesia in partnership with Marine Aquarium Council has been introducing environmentally safe standard as new fishing standard to the fishermen. It is expected that there will be certified local fishermen and certified exporters of ornamental fish under a sustainable community based ornamental fish enterprise at the end of the project.
- With the support from LEAD International, Ministry of Environment and LEAD Indonesia have been working in Lamreh, a village in the area of Malahayati, Aceh, on Eco Village development. In collaboration with other partners, LEAD Indonesia has been working on developing “Community Village Planning”, as well as building local skills in facilitating discussion, and organising of Community Village Meetings.
- Water Treatment Mobile Plan for Aceh Recovery: LEAD Indonesia/YPB undertook the coordination of procurement, construction and delivery of five donated water treatment plant units to Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, in collaboration with Fellows and partners in the region.
- Palanggaran Village Electrification and Gardening: The project aimed to generate electricity in this remote village toward a more productive life for the people of Palanggaran Village in West Java Province, and to support gardening activities that provide alternative fuel energy. Tri Mumpuni (LEAD Fellow, cohort 2), through her NGO, IBEKA, has started the micro hydro-power construction in the village.
- Young Leader project participant, Richard Harrap, took part in Tri Mumpuni’s (LEAD Fellow of Cohort 2) program of “Saving the Environment for a Better Future”, in Subang, West Java.
