LEAD Anglophone and West Africa 2005 Highlights
LEAD Anglophone and West Africa in collaboration with its host organisation, Foundation for Environmental Development and Education in Nigeria (FEDEN) being one of the founding Members Programmes has over the years built a reputation as one of the foremost capacity building, non-governmental organizations in Nigeria. The Programme has tremendous goodwill in all sectors of the society, including NGOs and civil society, government, business, international multilateral organizations, and academia.
LEAD Anglophone West Africa:
In an effort to strengthen the LEAD Programme in West African sub-region, LEAD-Nigeria embarked on activities towards the realisation of LEAD-Anglophone Africa intended to extend the LEAD Programme to such countries like Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Gambia. Candidates from these countries would be in a position to acquire the necessary competence to make an impact on the civil society and on public policy institutions in their countries.
Pan-African Focus:
Furthermore, in conjunction with two other African LEAD Programmes in Southern and Eastern Africa and Francophone Africa, LEAD Nigeria are implementing a Pan African initiative which aims to promote leadership for sustainable development in Africa.
Fellows Forum:
With Fellows Network, the emphasis is now both sub-regional and national. The Fellows Forum will be independent and be able to forms its independent opinion on how best to move the LEAD Programme forward in the West African sub-region. The Forum will be responsible for the development of its own activities.
LEAD Fellows in Nigeria continue to exchange information and share knowledge with each other. There are various ways to help them to stay connected:
- General Assembly or an inter-cohort meeting plays a crucial role in its support and activities towards the enhancement of LEAD Programme in Nigeria. The collective ability of Fellows to make a difference on sustainable development is seen in the impacts they are making both in the private and public sectors in Nigeria.
- Several meetings of Fellows from the same cohort where targeted issues of sustainability and development are discussed were organised in 2005.
Fellows and staff of LEAD Nigeria continued to participate at various international events, making LEAD voices heard and raising the visibility of LEAD:
- Mr. A. Abolarin (Cohort 3) and Mr. A.O. Okuwobi (Cohort 10), participated in Cambridge/IFC Consultative Forum on Business and Sustainable Development held in Abuja, Nigeria in April 2005. Mr. Abolarin who is the General Manager, Sustainable Development, ELF Petroleum Nig. Plc, presented a paper on “Sustainability with Profitability: The Community Factor in the Petroleum Industry”. The paper was well applauded by the Organizers and participants. The Director, LEAD-Nigeria also participated at the Forum.
