LEAD China 2005 Highlights

LEAD China, hosted by Fuping Development Institute, is a respected NGO with a steady track record.

Fellows Training:

In 2005, LEAD China graduated 24 Fellows. As part of the Fellows Training programme, LEAD China Fellows collaborated to work on projects, which included:

  • The studies of social impact of the major dam construction of the Nuijiang (Salween) River
  • Impact of natural conservation on local livelihoods in the Qinlin Mountains, which received financial support form the Shell China
  • The Chinese environment governance structure and enforcement.

Networking and Action Projects:

LEAD Fellows are very supportive and many are actively engaged in all LEAD China activities. For example, in collaboration with LEAD China, Hao Bing (Cohort 9) and Wang Chengo (Cohort 5) are leading a program on poverty reduction, financed by the Ford Foundation and Li Zhe (Cohort 9) manages New Ventures China program.

In a commitment to deliver LEAD-like training to a wider audiences and make a bigger impact on sustainable development, LEAD China organized several training sessions for Chinese NGOs, involving more than 350 people, including representatives from universities, government, industry and media.

More than 600 teachers in 200 schools attended special demonstrations and training classes organised to promote a renewable energy textbook, which LEAD China has developed. The project has been endorsed by municipal educational authorities and sponsored by Shell China.

In 2005, Institute for Environment and Development, which hosts LEAD China, continued to provide technical assistance and management for “Pathways to Higher Education” project, aimed at poverty reduction on Chinese university campuses through institutional innovation. The project is currently being implemented in 10 universities across China.

Knowledge Sharing:

LEAD China realizes the importance of ICT for development and puts a great emphasis on developing a solid ICT platform. LEAD China is now one of the leading actors on online learning and knowledge sharing in the NGO arena. In addition to keeping LEAD China Fellows connected via various IT solutions, IED/LEAD China’s IT department is serving a large network of grassroots NGOs across China. Information portals that serve as learning platforms on cross-cutting issues of sustainable development have been developed and regional NGO coordinators have been trained up on various IT matters in order to maximise their gain from using these resources:

Last year LEAD China signed contracts with HP and Microsoft, for provision of computers and 100 sets of software for poor college students, rural schools and farmers’ associations.
