History of LEAD
As the world was preparing for the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, LEAD was identifying an urgent need for a new generation of global leaders. Since then, we have been recruiting talented individuals from key sectors and professions all over the world to be part of a growing network now standing at 1600 leaders, who are committed to changing the world. Every one of our leaders is a graduate of LEAD’s international Fellows Training Programme, an intensive and demanding programme designed to enhance leadership ability, strengthen sustainable development knowledge and foster the relationships that will continue to support our Fellows in their life work. This cross-sectoral, cross-cultural programme has been at the heart of LEAD activities across the globe.
Through our expanding activities, the LEAD network now reaches out to thousands of individuals every year. Our participants include business executives, government policy makers, university professors, NGO directors, education specialists, and media professionals, all of whom are working to make a difference in their communities and countries.
What makes us unique?
Our approach, our reach, our experience
LEAD’s approach to training is based on tested adult-learning methodology that is experiential, learner centred, participatory, highly dynamic and fun! We use a wide range of methodologies, including interactive panel discussions, place-based case studies, site visits, computer-aided simulations, peer-to-peer learning, role-play, individual and team projects.
Our international training sessions provide participants with an enriching and diverse cross-cultural experience. With up to 35 nationalities present in a session, participants observe that their training experience is strengthened through the joint learning and exchange that happens among them.
Today the LEAD Network has 14 regional offices, each led by dedicated, multi-lingual training staff who design, adapt, and deliver high quality training and capacity development courses and activities. LEAD trainers are supported by experienced logistics staff as well as a network of expert resource persons, numbering over 1000 globally, who provide not only exceptional professional expertise on sustainable development issues, but also the invaluable viewpoint that practitioners bring.
What makes LEAD stand apart is our wealth of experience designing, developing, and implementing high quality, multi-sectoral training and capacity development for diverse international audiences. Our unique approach, reach, and experience have made us renowned in the training field.
“You can always tell when there’s a cadre of LEAD people in an organisation. It changes that organisation. It gives it a new life, new energy and frankly new relevance. Nothing is more needed than the kind of leaders which LEAD produces.”
Maurice Strong
Undersecretary General, United Nations
“We need leaders who can inspire people; who are well informed on the issues; who are committed and motivated. LEAD is exactly the right kind of organisation. I am amazed that we didn’t have one like this before.”
Rt Hon Michael Meacher MP
Former Minister of the Environment
