LEAD partner CDKN launches Innovation Fund

The Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) supports decision makers in designing and delivering climate compatible development – a form of development that seeks to minimise the impact on the planet.

CDKN promotes the achievement of climate compatible development through a combination of research, advisory services and knowledge sharing in support of locally owned and managed policy processes. It works in partnership with decision makers in the public, private and non-governmental sectors national, regionally and globally.

CDKN is delivered through an alliance of organisations including LEAD International, which leads on fostering and strengthening local, regional and global partnerships. In addition, Member Programme LEAD Pakistan is also an alliance member, encouraging partnerships and implementing projects and activities across the Asia region.

The new CDKN Innovation Fund aims to promote innovative thinking and innovative action on climate change and development issues. The Fund is flexible: it will support both the process through which pioneering ideas can be transformed into project proposals as well as pre-prepared research proposals.

The overall budget of this funding round is £1.1 million and applications are invited on the following themes:

  • Climate compatible development strategies and plans
  • Improving developing countries' access to climate finance
  • Strengthening resilience through climate-related disaster risk management

The first round of applications will close on 28th October 2011 at 17:00 (GMT+1). Future funding rounds will be announced on the CDKN website.

LEAD Brazil training programme – New Earth Leaders

LEAD Brazil has just begun its training programme for Cohort 16 Associates, entitled ‘LEAD New Earth Leaders.’ The programme aims to equip leaders with the skills for sustainable decision-making and is based on the principles of the Earth Charter - a statement of the fundamental principles for building a sustainable and peaceful global society.

The first training module took place in September in Mairiporã where the Associates focussed on developing their leadership skills. In October they will travel to Canada for the LEAD International Session on the Green Economy, and in November they will complete Module 3 in Cananéia, where they will focus on Otto Scharmer’s ‘U theory’.

LEAD Europe - Brussels Module, September 2011

"This environment of being among friends is a catalyst for evolving and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone in many aspects" Elena Spiliotopoulou, Freelance HR Consultant and LEAD Associate,

In early June 23 LEAD Associates from across Europe embarked on their LEAD Europe 'Leadership for Sustainable Development' learning journey. This began with an online module and then a training session in London that covered leadership skills. In September the Associates reconvened for their second training module in Brussels which explored leadership and specifically advocacy and negotiation skills from a more regional point of view.

The module, entitled 'The EU and Leadership: Towards a Sustainable Future', encouraged participants to familiarise themselves with the EU decision making process, practice their understanding of systems thinking and apply their learning on advocacy and influencing. Associates had the opportunity to engage in conversations with a number of guest speakers who joined the group for thematic panels on energy and climate policy, leadership and the EU power play.

A site visit to the European Parliament and the European Commission allowed Associates to take a behind the scenes look and learn from experienced EU negotiators. The highlight for many Associates was a negotiation simulation on CO2 emission reduction targets, which allowed them to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme as they tried to understand the needs and interests of all the stakeholders in order to reach an agreement. Participants also undertook LEAD Associate Projects which allowed them to share knowledge and expertise through peer-to-peer learning.

The final step for LEAD Europe Associates will be the International Session in Ottawa, Canada, which brings together more than 120 sustainability professionals from over 30 countries. Together they will explore leadership, learning and technology for a sustainable world. By the end of the weeklong module Associates will graduate from the LEAD Europe Programme and will join the global LEAD network of Fellows.

For more information please read the highlights report, visit the LEAD Europe website or read the LEAD Europe blog.
