LEAD Europe Pan-European Session 2013

EU Negotiation SimulationThe 2013 Pan-European Session was the highlight of the LEAD Europe Sustainability Leadership Programme bringing participants from around the globe to Latimer Place, Buckinghamshire, UK, for a dynamic leadership learning experience. Held from 27 April to 1 May 2013, the Session was a fully international, cross-cultural event with participants from Indonesia to Portugal, from Sweden to Nigeria.

Attracting emerging leaders from all sectors, public and private, NGO and academia, this inspirational event provided an invaluable opportunity to explore sustainability from a broader perspective. Workshops focused on key skills and knowledge for effective leadership for sustainability. Guest speakers such as Marco van der Ree from UN Volunteers and Barry Gardiner British Member of Parliament were specially selected to enrich the experience, to deepen understanding, provoke and inspire.

Participants developed their capacity for essential leadership skills such as systems thinking, advocacy and influencing, and negotiation. These were tested in a structured simulation of a European Union vote about shale gas. The simulation challenged the participants with many advocating positions different from their personal opinions. After a tense day of lobbying, coalition forming and deal making, a 'resolution' was passed showing all concerned the immense complexity of these situations.

By completing the Pan-European Session, participants graduated to be LEAD Fellows in the LEAD Alumni network. Taking their connections with international participants of the Session as a starting point, the graduates will be able to reach out to Fellows from other regions, strengthening their own personal and professional networks.

Building on the successes of the Pan-European Session and the previous challenge sessions, the LEAD Europe Sustainability Leadership Programme looks to improve even further for next year's intake.
