LEAD Indonesia holds public seminar on the Green Economy

In a series of LEAD Associate Trainings for Cohort 16 with the theme of the Green Economy: Exploring Paths to Vibrant Future, LEAD Indonesia held a public seminar on 24 May 2011 in Jakarta to bridge the dialogue between the various sectors to understand the concepts, policies and mechanisms that try to apply by the Indonesian government.

Invited as keynote speaker Prof. Emil Salim (Founder & Chairman of the Governing Board Yayasan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan – host organization for LEAD Indonesia programmes) discussed the importance of alternative economic scenarios for achieving sustainable development and achievement of targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for Indonesia. Highlighting the challenges from the politic, economy and social sector, Prof. Emil Salim mentioned that government accompanied by business-groups needs balancing partners from civil society and there should be focus of attention on enforcement of regulation and network creation among stakeholders to implement the green economy from concept to real action.

The first speaker of the seminar was Dr. Mubariq Ahmad PhD (Climate Change Policy Advisor, World Bank) who discussed the concept of a green economy and the challenges of implementing a low carbon economy and biodiversity-based industries in. Then Dr. Ir. Rr. Endang Murniningtyas MSc (Deputy Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of National Development Planning / Bappenas) discussed the grand design of the green economy concept endorsed by the government of Indonesia (pro poor - pro job - pro growth - pro-environment). The discussion of the concept of green economy Indonesian government is expected to provide significant exposure on long-term perspective of the Indonesian National Development Plan. Ir. Laksmi Dewanthi MA (LEAD Fellow Cohort 12, Assistant Deputy First Deputy Economy on the Environment, Ministry of Environment) provided the information on the concept of sustainable consumption and production practiced towards green economy. According to her, policies as well as market failures (subsidized growth, distorted energy prices, no internalized pollution cost) are main causes of the current environmental problems. There should be interventions for market corrections and changing behaviors, including incentive/disincentive schemes. The session was facilitated by Rofiqoh Rokhim PhD (Faculty of Economy, University of Indonesia).

The second session discussed the economic policies which are owned by the green energy sector, forestry and agriculture. For discussion of the concept of a green economy and energy was presented by Ir. Luluk Sumiarso M.Sc. (Director-General of New Energy, Renewable Energy and Conservation, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources). As for the speaker about the concept of a green economy and Indonesia's forestry sector was Dr. Ir. Yetti Rusli MSc (Senior Advisor for Environment and Climate Change, Ministry of Forestry) and for the agricultural sector was Ir. Emilia Yusni Harahap MM (Senior Advisor Environment, Ministry of Agriculture). This discussion session was led by Nana Firman (LEAD Fellow Cohort 15).

Yayasan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan - LEAD Indonesia has been promoting intensive workshops on Leadership, Environment and Sustainable Development since 1992 for all sectors. As part of a series of activities under the LEAD Associate Training Cohort 16, we hope this seminar can be used as a means of multi-sectoral dialogue on economic issues Green (Green Economy). Through this session, YPB - LEAD Indonesia expects that there will be further thinking and understanding of the concepts, policies and implementation of a green economy in Indonesia. The dialogue will be an opportunity to develop new business strategy alternatives that serve the new needs of society, with a sense of responsibility for the welfare of mankind and the preservation of the environment, and economic benefits.
