LEAD Indonesia train Ministry for National Development on integrated and sustainable natural resource management

LEAD Indonesia Train

Yayasan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan the host organisation for LEAD Indonesia programs recently (23-25 February 2011) trained staff of the Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning on integrated and sustainable natural resource management in times of climate change.

Funded by UKAid (DFID) and the British Council, the workshop developed the knowledge and skills of ministry staff in formulating development plans with measurable indicators and targets, developing innovative strategies to meet these targets as well as the importance of teamwork in achieving the goals through assessment using the AtKisson Sustainability Accelerator Tools (ASATs).

As the ministry has a mandate to coordinate national planning, this training on an integrated approach to sustainable development is key, and fits in with wider development plans of the country which staff that have been trained in these areas can now better translate into action.

Dr. Basah Hernowo, Director of Forest and Water Resources, stated that the workshop was an exercise for staff to develop an integrated understanding and development training strategy based on sustainable development principles. As leaders in decision making systems it was hoped that through the training, staff would be able to implement the methodology through a national development plan.

Dr. Fahmuddin Agus, Soil Management and Conservation Specialist of the Indonesian Soil Research Institute, presented a discussion session on Policy Scenarios for Reducing Carbon Emissions from Indonesia’s Peatland. Dr. Mubariq Ahmad, spoke on the report of UNEP on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) and linked it to biodiversity management in Indonesia.

At the end of the workshop, participants came up with indicators, systems and innovative strategies for sustainable forest management in Riau Province where they were from.

LEAD Indonesia would like to thank to Emil Sumirat (LEAD Fellow of Cohort 10), Gita Meidita (LEAD Fellow of Cohort 15) as well as Robert Steele (Senior Associate of AtKisson Group International and Director of Systainability Asia) for facilitating the workshop session.
