LEAD Indonesia explore the Green Economy through an awareness raising workshop

LEAD Indonesia and their Fellows from Cohort 15 recently ran a workshop involving 50 participants from a diversity of sectors to promote the concept of a green economy in Indonesia and exploring avenues for raising public awareness of the issue.

The event, which was featured in the local press, explored the current discourse on the concept of green economy in Indonesia and globally. Dr. Mubariq Ahmad from the World Bank Indonesia stressed the need for a low-carbon economy and biodiversity-based industry in order to pre-empt the future competitiveness challenge in all sectors. He also outlined the need for an incentive structure to support green economy schemes aimed at achieving sustainable development.

Focusing on Indonesia, Dr. Imam Hendargo Abu Ismoyo from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment spoke of how the ministry view the Green Economy as a development paradigm based on a resources efficiency approach with a strong emphasis on internalising the costs of natural resource depletion and environmental degradation as well as an effort to alleviate poverty, creating decent jobs and ensuring sustainable economic growth.

Later sessions outlined learning from the experiences of leading companies in Indonesia that have been trying to implement the concept of green economy on the path of sustainability.Sakariza Qory Hemawan (LEAD Fellows Cohort 15, PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk),Sinta Kaniawati (LEAD Fellows Cohort 15, PT Unilever Indonesia) and Harnaka Harto (LEAD Fellows Cohort 15, IBM Indonesia) presented their experiences in promoting green economy concept in the business world.
