Darwin Initiative projects: Successful completion (2005-2008)
LEAD International and its partners, the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) in India and LEAD Indonesia, have successfully completed (April 2005 – April 2008) the two Darwin Initiative projects to conserve local biodiversity and improve fishing communities’ livelihood.

Beyond Corporate Social Responsibility: Future scenarios in a rapidly changing society was the theme covered in the first meeting of the Sustainability Leaders Forum, on 22 May in London. The Forum is a result of Lord Holme’s vision to bring business leaders together to discuss key sustainability challenges and share ideas on how to address them.

LEAD India Fellow Deepak Apte receives Award in London
LEAD India Fellow , Deepak Apte, a marine biologist with the Bombay Natural History Society, has received a one of the world’s top prizes for grassroots nature conservation – A Whitley Award - for his work to protect the marine life of the Lakshadweep archipelago. The prize was presented to him by HRH ThePrincess Royal (Princess Anne) at the Royal Geographical Society in London on 21 May 2008.

UN Convention on Biological Diversity - 9th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties
From 19 to 30 May 2008 Germany hosted the 9th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. Nearly 7,000 participants from 191 countries opened the Conference to take takes steps to conserve and sustainably manage the world’s biodiversity in light of the alarming rate of loss of species, compounded by the pressures from climate change.

Four LEAD India Fellows have been accepted as participants on a two day training programme with joint Nobel Prize Winner Al Gore. The training programme is part of the Climate Project Initiative and is supported by the Centre for Social Markets, widely known for its campaign for Indian leadership on climate change.

Thin Green Line
With support of filmmaker and LEAD India Fellow Aradhana Kohli Kapoor, LEAD India produced a film series on the environment for Doordarshan, an Indian Television channel. The series – The Thin Green Line, featured discussions between school children and eminent environmentalists on a whole number of topical environmental issues. The series was supported by film showings, debates and discussions at a number of venues. environmentalists on issues related to Animal Rights, Human and Wildlife Conflicts, Economic Development & Environmental Degradation, Closure of Polluting Industries & Labour Problems, Eco Tourism & Environmental Degradation.

Professional Fellowships Programme under Commonwealth Professional Fellowship
Puskin Phartyal, won a prestigious Commonwealth Professional Fellowship Award which funded a three month research placement at the LEAD International Secretariat in London. Whilst at LEAD International, Pushkin worked with the team on the design of a training support programme for rural communities in the Himalayas that will be affected by climate change impacts.

Major award for Julia Marton-Lefèvre
Long-standing LEAD supporter and former LEAD Executive Director, Julia Marton–Lefevre has been conferred as a Chevalier de Legion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour) in recognition of her outstanding work on sustainable development. The Legion d’Honneur is the highest civil award bestowed by the French Republic and is given to people of all backgrounds and nationalities for exceptional service over a long career.

Internship Opportunity
LEAD is currently recruiting for an intern to work as part the project team that will deliver an International Session 2008 on Sustainable Cities in a Changing World in Mexico City. The internship will be based at the LEAD Mexico offices in Mexico City for eight months from April 2008, with a two week induction at the LEAD International Secretariat in London.

Climate Change Africa Consultations: Six Messages From Civil Society
In its most recent report, the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlighted the serious impact climate change will have on Africa.
In response to this, LEAD Africa, LEAD International and their African partners, SouthSouthNorth (SSN), ENDA Du Tiers Monde (ENDA TM), and the African Centre for Technology (ACTS), brought together development and climate change experts from across sub-Saharan Africa to discuss how the continent should adapt to climate change.
This paper presents six key messages which represent a summary of the discussions and recommendations for action.

International Event on Leadership and Climate Change
LEAD Indonesia hosted the 2007 LEAD International Session on "Leadership and Climate Change" ahead of the Bali Climate Change Conference of Parties. Speakers including Emil Salim, Chair of the Indonesia delegation to CoP13, and Daniel Murdiyarso, Senior Scientist with CIFOR addressed 150 global leaders drawn from across the LEAD network.

Corporate high fliers meet sustainability challenges in Brazil
In September 2007, LEAD Brazil and LEAD International delivered a challenging and innovative leadership development programme designed to develop an understanding of sustainability in future leaders of the banking world. Six teams of carefully selected high fliers met with LEAD Fellows in Brazil and were challenged to develop financial solutions tailored to responsible business.

Asia Young Leaders Climate Forum
In December 2008, LEAD and the British Council delivered a climate change action workshop for the Asia Young Leaders Climate Forum (AYLCF). The workshop helped AYLCF develop a climate action agenda and project ideas for helping young people and communities tackle climate change. The workshop outcomes were then presented at the United Nations Conference of Parties on Climate Change in Bali. Sir Nicholas Stern was so impressed with the AYLCF vision and commitment that he agreed to mentor the group.

Survey shows LEAD Fellowship Programme positively impacts sustainable development
In 2006, LEAD conducted a major ‘Measuring the Impact’ survey of Fellows from its global network to find out how they felt the Fellowship Programme had helped them to prioritise sustainable development. The results were overwhelmingly positive with over 75% of those surveyed saying that the training had a high or very high impact on their lives. Many said going through the LEAD Fellowship programme had been a ‘life-changing experience’.
