Biography
Gustavo Alanis ORTEGA is a Lawyer from the Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA) in Mexico City and has a Masters Degree (LL.M.)in International Law, specialized in International Environmental Law, from the American University, Washington College of Law, Washington, D.C.. He was a consultant for the Environmental Law Institute (ELI), which is based in Washington, D.C. For the past six years, he has been teaching national and international environmental law at the Panamerican University (UP) in Guadalajara, Jalisco; Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de Mexico (ITAM) in Mexico City; Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) in Guadalajara, Jalisco and also in the State of Mexico and Ciudad Obregon, Sonora; the Environmental Program of the National University (UNAM); and the Anah�ac University, in Jalapa, State of Veracruz.
Since January 1994 to date he is Professor of Environmental Law at the Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA)Law School and also is Co-Director since 1999 of the Diploma that the UIA has on Environmental Law and Policy.
He is a member of the Program Advisory Board of the International Center on Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD), and a member of the Committee on Intellectual Property Rights and the Convention on Biodiversity Diversity of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
He has delivered speeches and lectures on Mexican Environmental Law in Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.
Since August 1993 to date, he is the President of the Mexican Environmental Law Center (Centro Mexicano de Derecho Ambiental, A.C. (CEMDA)), an NGO whose goal is to improve the enforcement and compliance of environmental laws and to create a greater public awareness about environmental problems.
Gustavo is a Columnist for the Reforma Newspaper in Mexico City, on topics related to environmental law and education.
