Biography
Jamal M. GAWI was academic coordinator at the Centre for Environmental Research and Natural Resources of Syiah Kuala University, where his responsibilities include coordinating and designing courses, workshops and seminars. He has published on the topic of sustainable development.
J.M. Gawi has a master's degree in environmental studies from York University in Toronto, Canada, and a bachelor's degree in agriculture from Syiah Kuala University in Indonesia. He also studied environmental auditing at the University of Indonesia, Environmental Management System (ISO 14000) in Sweden, and Introduction to Enviornmental Economics in The Philippines.
He was working as Project's Coordinator in Leuser Development Program from 1998-2002. Since October 2002 he works as an environment and development specialist in Program Support Unit-CIDA, Jakarta.
Starting January 2005 until now, he was appointed as Chief Advisor for CIDA Tsunami program in Aceh and North Sumatera. His main responsibility is to support the implementation of CIDA projects in the rehabilition and reconstruction of Aceh in the aftermath of tsunami. He was invited in November 2006 to present a paper in Canada on the topic of "transition from relief to recovery in the post tsunami Aceh".
Cuurently he also serves as the Head of Board of Directors of The Leuser International Foundation that is active in the conservation of 2.6 million hectares of the rare Leuser Ecosystem in Aceh and North Sumatra.
