Biography
Elise Buckle is a Global Programme coordinator for IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, based at its Headquarters in Switzerland. Her main role is to coordinate project development, programme planning, monitoring and evaluation, working in close collaboration with IUCN regional offices in Asia and Africa. She started up and led the development of the IUCN climate change initiative, connecting IUCN networks, building capacities of regional members and partners in Africa and Asia and coordinating advocacy efforts towards an equitable post-2012 agreement on climate change.
With an early professional foundation rooted in development work with poor communities in Chile and Tajikistan, Elise started her career in the field of disaster reduction and poverty reduction working for the United Nations (UNDP and ECLAC) and for local NGOs (ACTED, Unis Cité). She then became more and more aware of the linkages between environment and development, between nature and people.
She then worked for the Green Members of the European Parliament, following-up and advising the MEPs on the latest policy debates and coordinating the climate change and REACH chemicals campaigns in France, at the interface with the European network. She also worked as a consultant for Ernst & Young Sustainability Services, advising local authorities for the development of their Agenda 21 plans, as well as multinational companies such as Total Cameroon and Gaz de France for improving their Corporate Social Responsibility reporting.
Elise Breyton Buckle has a Masters degree in International Relations and Development from Sciences Po (the Institute of Political Studies in Paris), and a MSc. of Environmental Policy Planning and Regulation from the London School of Economics.
Originally from the French Alps, she is passionate about the outdoors, spending her free time mountaineering, hiking, climbing, skiing but also writing and practising photography and yoga. She loves spending time with people, sharing adventures and contemplating the beauty of nature.
