Biography

Ilse Carin AUCAMP is an environmental consultant from South Africa, specializing in Social Impact Assessment. She has 12 years of combined professional experience in social development, community development and social impact assessment, having practiced in the field since January 1995. She holds a Masters degree in Environmental Management from the University of Potchefstroom and a B.A. degree in Social Work from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Her academic knowledge has been supplemented by a variety of short courses on various aspects of environmental management and social aspects. In addition, she is currently busy with PhD studies in the field of Social Impact Assessment at the University of Pretoria. She frequently acts as a guest lecturer on Masters and Honours programmes in Environmental Management, Social Development and Engineering and has presented three papers at international conferences in the last two years. She is also involved with the presentation of short course at the Centre for Environmental Management at the University of the North West in South Africa. She presents topics concerning the social environment on the Environmental Impact Assessment, Risk Management and Social Impact Assessment courses.

Ilse has been elected as the chair person of the Social Impact Assessment sector of the International Association of Impact Assessment for the 2006-2008. She is also a member of the National Executive Committee of IAIA South Africa, with the brief to develop the Social Impact Assessment section of the organisation in South Africa. She has written a guideline document for Socio-economic Impact Assessment for the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism in South Africa as part of the Integrated Environmental Management series. Her experience includes Social Impact Assessments for developments ranging from low cost housing and golf estates to linear projects such as power lines. She also has experience in conducting sustainable livelihood assessments, compiling Integrated Management Plans and Social and Labour Plans for the mining industry. Her main interests are integrating social and environmental issues and empowering people through participatory processes.
