Biography

Mark Bekkering has eighteen years of experience in municipal government in the areas of policy development, project management and stakeholder negotiations associated with land use planning, infrastructure provision, employment changes, demographic trends, housing, environmental concerns, transportation management, municipal governance systems, and responding to proposed Provincial and Federal legislation and policy. He has initiated and managed innovative multi-stakeholder sustainability initiatives that have been recognized nationally and internationally.

Currently he is the Manager of Environmental Planning and Support in the Toronto Environment Office responsible for the City of Toronto's Climate Change Action Plan, the Green Toronto Awards, the Green Toronto Festival, the Environmental Plan and various other environmental initiatives of the City.

Prior to moving to Toronto, Mark worked for 10 years with the Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth where he was responsible for the coordination of projects, such as, Hamilton-Wentworth's VISION 2020 Sustainable Community Initiative; development of an Environmental Management System (EMS) for the water and sewage treatment and solid waste management services; a major review of the Region's Land Use Plan; and the development of a Water Management Strategy.
