Biography

Maria Lidia Bueno FERNANDES is a doctoral candidate in Geography, specializing on the theme of “Education for Sustainability”. Her master's degree in anthropology is from the Ludwig-Maximiliam-Universitat in Munich, Germany. She received her bachelor's degree in geography from the University of São Paulo, Brazil.

Presently, her work is related to the continued development of professionals from various sectors of the community.

Organizing and instructing development programs for teachers working within the public education system with its focus on citizenship, politics and the environment.
In addition, she administered courses for public workers: managers and administrators offered by the State University of São Paulo concentrating on the areas of environment and sustainability.

She has participated in the development program to educate young and adults in formal education, conduct by the Instituto Paulo Freire in conjunction with Fundação Roberto Marinho.

A current member of the consulting body of the Participativo Program, which is engaged in further education and the exchange of ideas and experiences over participation and involvement of democratic management.

She is also employed at Vera Cruz School, as a geography teacher.

Prior to this position, she was involved in environmental, social, political and cultural issues through her work with several NGOs. Whilst at the Instituto Socioambiental, she participated in research and data collection related to protected areas in savannas and tropical forests.

She also worked on a project monitoring and supporting the traditionally-occupied populations living in environmentally-sensitive areas. During her time in Germany, she was a founding member and president of Casa do Brasil, an NGO, as well as a volunteer with Pro Regenwald, another NGO dealing with environmental and human rights issues.
