Biography

Kimio Uno acted on behalf of Keio University, which is the host institution for the LEAD Japan Program, at the inception of Program in 1996 and since facilitated the operation both within and without the program. He is the third NPD of LEAD Japan after Masayo Hasegawa and Yumiko Umehara.

Kimio Uno is a Council member of Keio University and professor, Graduate School of Media and Governance, after being Dean, Faculty of Policy Management during 1995-2001. He currently teaches policy analysis (graduate level), modeling and simulation (graduate level), macroeconomics (undergraduate level), and workshops. Before moving to Keio, he taught at Graduate School of Environmental Studies at University of Tsukuba (1978-1990). He was a visiting professor at Yale University as a senior researcher of Fulbright Program (1980-1981) and a visiting researcher at IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) (1988-1990). He serves as a visiting professor at United Nations University since 2003. He is a member of various international academic associations including London Group on environmental accounting and information system, IARIW (International Association for Research in Income and Wealth), and IIOA (International Input-Output Association) and participated in a series of informal intergovernmental meetings on Future Actions on Climate Change.

He has been active in database field and serves as a Council member of the Database Promotion Center in Japan. He constructed database and simulation system in economy, energy, and environmental spheres covering 60 counties/regions with detailed industrial breakdown; spatial database for sustainable development with global coverage with zooming-in, zooming out functions; web-based e-learning system on sustainable development (graduate level), web-casting system on coral reef, and multimedia interactive e-learning tools based on field studies. For this purpose, he has worked with UNU in establishing Media Studio as the production site.

He proposed Asia Pacific Initiative for sustainable development as the Type II commitment at the WSSD in 2002 in Johannesburg. The plan consists of three pillars including international joint research, international joint curriculum, and Internet broadcasting for outreach and is intended to be the framework for LEAD Japan's future activities. The development of case-based e-learning tools was jointly reported by Keio, UNU, CISCO Systems, and LEAD International at the WSIS (World Summit on the Information Society) in 2003 in Geneva. The approach is endorsed by the LEAD Japan's steering committee as well as collaborating institutions including IGES (Institute for Global Environmental Strategies), United Nations University, Research Institute for Subtropics, FASID (Foundation for Advanced Studies on International Development), GEA (Global Environmental Action), Asian Institute of Technology, TERI, among others.
