Biography

Marli Maria de MATTOS is a consultant on a project to introduce participatory research into the management of secondary forests in northeast of Para State. This project is partnership of Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation and the Center for International Forestry Research. An agronomist, she has lived and worked in the Amazon region since 1980. She previously worked at the Amazonian Institute of Man and the Environment (IMAZON), where she addressed the social, economic and environmental impacts of timber extraction, palm-heart extraction and cattle ranching.

While at the Amazonian Environmental Research Institute (IPAM), she worked in partnership with small landholder communities and their organizations. She was involved in participatory research, extension and training and also played an advisory role. In this position, she developed materials pertaining to timber resources valuation, community mapping using satellite imagery, participatory socio-economic survey, evaluation of mining impacts in small landholders' communities, and community fire management. She has published national and international scientific papers, educational booklets, and information materials for a radio campaign to prevent and control fires. M.M. Mattos has a master's degree in plant genetics.
