Climate change is real and it is already happening across our urban centres, coastlines, deltas and valleys, from Morocco and Egypt to Nigeria and Sudan to Pakistan and Indonesia. If there is one challenge confronting the contemporary world, which calls for immediate reflection and action that surely is climate change. If global carbon levels continue to increase as they have, the earth's climate will become unmanageable and intolerable, with frequent natural disasters, loss of lives and livelihoods, and conflicts over depleting resources that might erupt out of control.
Adapting to climate change impacts is a complex task but one that we can ill-afford to put off. Although, we are at an early stage in understanding the likely impacts and solutions, there are steps governments, businesses, and communities can take now to prepare for future climate change challenges. Nations that make up the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) can no longer afford to sit back and watch the climatic changes wreak havoc on our planet. We have to take initiatives locally, regionally and globally to comprehend the phenomenon and begin to plan risk reduction and mitigation strategies for the future.
LEAD Pakistan,in collaboration with its family of LEAD programmes across the global LEAD Network, has been working on the promotion of environmentally sensitive development since 1997 and has recently initiated a process of capacity building and program planning in Climate Change. The organization, in collaboration with the OIC Committee for Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) had offered an intensive five-day conference titled Climate Change: Adaptation Challenges in OIC Countries.
