LINI organizes the first Indonesian Marine Ornamental Symposium

On 4 November 2008, The Indonesian Minister for Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Mr. Freddy Numberi opened the first Indonesian Marine Ornamental Symposium. The one-day event was organized by LINI. It was well attended by 92 participants, and supported with five oral presentations and nine posters. Awareness day for marine aquarium compressor divers

In some places in Indonesia, compressor diving is banned, but compressors are still very widely used for collecting aquarium fish, food fish, lobsters, pearl oysters and many other marine organisms. Compressor use has become increasingly popular as areas of shallow reef have been destroyed or overfished, and the collectors need to seek their catch at depths that are too great for free diving. Rebuilding the reefs with LINI

On 18 Oct 2008, LINI staff, together with marine aquarium fish collectors from Yeh Biu village, installed six hexadomes offshore, at a depth of 3 to 4 meters. Acting as artificial reefs, the hexadomes will provide new homes for reef fishes, and the large surface area of the domes will provide areas for new coral recruits.

Fishermen And Local Government Of Pulau Seribu Committed To Stopping Cyanide Use

On 27 August 2008,  LINI staff visited the marine aquarium fishermen in Pulau Seribu, Jakarta Bay, to assess progress there.  The visit coincided with a stakeholder meeting led by Bapak Ir. Abdul Rachman Andit, the Head of Pulau Seribu district. The meeting was attended by representatives of the local marine aquarium fish collectors Association (KLONPIS),  fish suppliers, the coral transplantation producers association (PERNITAS), Yayasan TERANGI, a community-based ecotourism association (‘Elang Laut’) and other members of the local community. LINI staff and Volunteers visit collectors communities in north Bali in August 2008

In August 2008, LINI staff accompanied two foreign volunteers, Kristian Gregory  and Duncan Brown on a visit to collectors’ villages in north Bali. They visited two schools (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Celukan Bawang and Public Elementary School No 3 of Sangga Langit) and installed a new computer and printer in each school, and provided some school books for the libraries which currently have very few books.
