Tamala Tonga KAMBIKAMBI
Tamala Tonga KAMBIKAMBI is an agronomist, lecturing in the School of Agricultural Sciences. Apart from lecturing, she conducts research and is consulted on various issues. She also seats on several national, regional and international Boards like that of the Southern Africa Biodiversity Support Programme (SABSP), Africa Biotechnology Stakeholders Forum (ABSF), LEAD SA and the Biotechnology Outreach Society of Zambia (BOSZ).

Tamala has invaluable experiences in rural extension and development, and poverty alleviation. Of late, with the growing debate on biotechnology in the region and particularly in Zambia, she has turned her energies to bringing 'sanity' to the rather skewed debates that have and are still going on in the country. To do so, she has helped to found the Biotechnology Outreach Society of Zambia whose main objective is to create an innovative and enabling environment in Zambia through education enhanced understanding and awareness creation on all aspects of biotechnology, biosafety and intellectual property rights. She is also a national correspondent for the FAO on biotechnologies in developing countries.

Tamala has decided to dedicate her energies for the time being to biotechnology as it is a technology with the potential to enhance and or aid sustainable development so long as the concerns and risks are properly handled. However, it has been given an unfair trial - therefore as a LEADer, she believes this is a challenge worth taking on!

Tamala's main research areas include biotechnology for sustainable agriculture, biosafety, and gender issues in science and technology. She has excellent interpersonal and communication skills, has great statistical and computer skills and is well versed in policy analysis and other analytical assignments.
