Anton is an associate of the UK based Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and lecturer in the Department of Geo-sciences at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He is responsible for the under and post-graduate environmental studies and environmental management programmes in this department as well as the supervision of relevant student research. His personal research interests mainly revolve around the fields of social capital, particularly its role in determining the outcome of community based natural resource management/conservation, as well as sustainability and environmental quality of life indicators. He has pioneered the development and application of environmental quality of life indicators in the Nelson Mandela Metro (South Africa), and recently indicators of social sustainability. Anton is furthermore involved in environmental advocacy having developed a series of popular lectures/presentations on climate change and global warming which are presented to diverse audiences on an ongoing basis.

Apart from his official duties at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Anton is also a Research and Environmental Consultant. Contract research is undertaken in a variety of fields, amongst others in that of sustainability and environmental quality of life indicators. He currently leads the (planning and research) process through which sustainability and environmental quality of life indicators are used to provide the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality with the informational means to plan for and facilitate sustainable communities in its area of jurisdiction. His involvement in environmental work encompasses the domains of environmental and social impact assessment, environmental management systems, and environmental training and capacity building.

Environmental training and capacity building is one of Anton’s passions. He has been involved in planning, developing and managing a number of endeavors in this regard, including Agenda 21 training and capacity building projects (Eastern Cape Province, South Africa); ongoing training and capacity building for the Eastern Cape Provincial Government (South Africa); and the Population, Environment and Development Nexus training program (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) in partnership with LEAD and the Department of Social Development’s National Population Unit.

Anton’s university education includes a Bachelor's Degree in Education, an Honours Degree in Geography and two Masters Degrees, one in Geography and the other in Environmental Management, from the University of the Free State (Bloemfontein, South Africa). He also holds a Doctorate in Geography from the University of Port Elizabeth (Port Elizabeth, South Africa). Other education and training includes a variety of courses in environmental management, sustainable development and environmental auditing.
