Andy Safalaoh is a Senior Lecturer in Monogastric Nutrition and Poultry Production with the University of Malawi based at Bunda College of Agriculture. Andy obtained a BSc. in Agriculture with Credit from the University of Malawi, Bunda College of Agriculture in 1985. Upon graduation, Andy worked with Save the Children Federation Inc./USA (SCF) in different capacities as Training Development Coordinator, Food Production Coordinator and Impact Area Programme Manager until 1989.
Andy has also attended several short courses and workshops including Training of Community Workers, Community Based Integrated Rural Development, Project Planning and Evaluation, Hog Production, Ecological and Sustainable Agriculture for smallholder farmers in Southern Africa and Baseline Survey Study Techniques. In 1989, Andy left SCF and joined the University of Malawi. In 1991, he went for further studies at Oklahoma State University in America where he obtained a Master of Science Degree in Animal Science in 1994. Andy is also involved in provision of consultancy services in project management and evaluation with main emphasis in livestock/poultry development projects and food security.
He has so far provided services to organisations such as GTZ, FAO, DANIDA, World Vision International, OXFAM, UNDP and World Bank funded projects. Hislatest involvement has been evaluation of the Malawi National Adult Literacy Programme in relation to the Malawi Reduction Strategy Paper. He is also a member of the Task Force of the development of the Malawi Research and Outreach Programme (MAROP) document/proposal to be funded by NORAD.
Andy is also currently the Chairman of the Research and Publications Committee at Bunda College and is the Editor In-Chief of Bunda Journal of Agriculture, Environmental Science and Technology.
His current keen interest is sustainable agriculture and rural developmemt with emphasis on the role of livestock in food security and natural resource management. In this regard, Andy is currently a co-researcher involved in a study on 'Analysis of Gender roles in livestock production in smallholder crop/livestocksystems in Malawi' funded by IFPRI.
