Mr. W. B. Papu is a Project Manager for Africon's Training and Communication Division for the Eastern Cape region and is responsible for the overall business planning and development of the office. Africon, with a staff complement of more than 600 professionals, is a South African-based, international consultancy providing multi-disciplinary services in engineering, infrastructure - related development and management, see www.africon.com

From 1991 - 1992 worked for the Department of Education and Culture as a science and biology educator. In 1993 he joined the Science Education Project as Science Educator based at the University of Port Elizabeth. In 1996-1997 he joined Ubuntu Environment Trust as its Executive Director.

In 1998 -2001, he worked for the Southern Africa Environment Project, a US registered NGO as its Managing Director. It is during this period he became involved in issues related to sustainable development. He has presented numerous papers and has participated in research in collaboration with a number of SA academic institutions. He has also presented lectures to graduate students at Rhodes University on Environmental Management issues in SA from the NGO perspective. He has also presented papers at the World Economic Forum, represented environmental NGOs in NEPA meetings in the US. He was part of the team of consultants that developed the EIA guidelines on behalf of the Lesotho government. He has under the USAID grant conducted workshops on Local Agenda 21 for Labour Unions, Municipality officials, Community Based Organizations and NGO's of the western region of the Eastern Cape. He was also very vocal on media about the economic and environmental sustainability of the Coega project. He holds a B Sc Ed, University of the Western Cape, Certificate in Environmental Education, Rhodes University and he is currently completing a Masters in Environmental Management at Stellenbosch University.
