Ana Luz QUINTANILLA Montoya is a full-time researcher at the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California (UABC) in the Instituto de Investigaciones Oceanol�gicas, and she was also the scientific editor of Ciencias Marinas, the most recognized scientific journal in marine sciences in Mexico (1992-2001). Her work has been published in international journals, and a multidisciplinary book concerning alternative energy resources in Baja California, Mexico will be published by the UABC in 2002. She has also contributed chapters to several books and has participated in national and international meetings of science editing. She has also worked with municipal and state authorities to promote the use of renewable energy resources in rural areas of Mexico.

She received a Ph.D. with honors in coastal oceanography from the UABC. Her thesis, �Technology Assessment System for the Alternative Energy Resources of the Rural Communities of the Pacific Coastal Zone of Baja California, Mexico,� focused on the search for alternative energy resources that could improve quality of life in poor rural communities without causing environmental damage. Her bachelor's degree is from the School of Marine Sciences at the UABC (1984), and her master's degree in applied geophysics is from the Centro de Investigaci�n Cient�fica y Educaci�n Superior de Ensenada (CICESE) (1990). She also took graduate courses at the University of California.
