Anders Wijkman is a Member of the European Parliament and Ambassador of the Swedish Foreign Ministry. His former positions include Assistant Secretary General at the UN and Policy Director at UNDP and Director General of the Swedish Agency for Research Cooperation with Developing Countries (SAREC).
In Sweden, he has been a member of several government task forces on issues related to environment, sustainable development, energy, foreign aid etc. During 1992-94 Mr Wijkman chaired a special government commission analysing the possible effects for Sweden's physical environment of joining the European Union. In 2000, he participated in the high-level expert panel on 'ICT (information and communication technologies) for development'; appointed by the UN secretary general.
He was educated at Stockholm University. He was President of the Disaster Relief Commission of the International Red Cross from 1981-1989 and Secretary General for the Swedish Red Cross 1979-1988. His publications include several books related to disaster prevention, sustainable development, and HIV/Aids. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the World Academy of Art and Sciences as well as the Club of Rome.
