Thomas Senganimalunje is lecturer in Physics at and former Head of the Physics Department at Chancellor College, the University of Malawi. He teaches undergraduate Physics and does research in Renewable Energy and Radiation Protection. He is also responsible for the Energy and Alternative Energy courses that are being offered in the Master of Environmental Science degree in the Faculty of Science.
During his career in the Physics Department, he has researched in cost-effective solar powered LED lighting system for rural schools in Malawi. The aim is to replace kerosene lamps with modern LED lights and also to investigate the feasibility of manufacturing such lamps locally.
He is also interested in mapping out the background radiation profile for Malawi. This profile will be used as a baseline to quantify the impact of exploiting our radioactive mineral resource - an industry that is expanding rapidly in Malawi.
